Due to availability of players on both sides the game started as 10 a side. From the kick off it was clear that this game suited the players available to Horsham more than Swanley as a good passing move was finished off by the Horsham winger for a converted try. The first quarter continued in the same vein as Horshams pacey outside backs found the outside 3 more times for 3 more tries.

In the break the Black Swans regrouped and although Horsham got away for 2 more tries there began to be some excellent phases of play from the Swans. Acer Baker made a run down the left before a good cover tackle by the Horsham winger. Then a great move started by Steph Buckland, who offloaded to Ellie Harris and then on to Tess Nolan who was then tackled into touch 15m from the line. Unfortunately the try that the Swans and their supporters were yearning for, didn’t come on this occasion as a breakaway led to Horsham scoring their 3rd try of the quarter. This wasn’t the end of encouragement for the black swans however, as another excellent run from beyond halfway by Laura Boyd, playing her first full contact game and today in the front row, was halted just 5m from the line by a covering tackler. This was the end of play in the first half.

The third quarter saw both teams go to 12 a side and this suited the Swans much better and this was a much more even quarter as both sides showed good defence and the forwards battled it out in the middle of the pitch. The scoring was broken however by a try for Horsham after some good handling by the backs.

The fourth quarter again showed good play from both sides, good strong running in the forwards and good defence all round. Injuries began to take their toll for the visitors as three swans left the field, Horsham again utilised their pacey backs and scored three more times in this final period. It was a game played with the spirit of rugby and both teams embraced after the final whistle.

Back and Forward of the match were chosen by the opposition and on this occasion went to Acer Baker as back of the match and Laura Boyd as forward of the match, both of them playing their first full contact match. Also added to that list were Lee-Ann Demarzo, Paula Smith, Magda Hopek. This match was more good experience for the Black Swans as they continued their development against a team a few years further ahead in theirs. Both the coaches and the supporters can see the progress that is being made game on game and look forward to the league starting next week away at Brockleians.

Thanks once again to those non players and supporters who made the long trip away and are always appreciated by all the players.

BLACK SWANS v LORDSWOOD VALKYRIES

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY 15/8/21

Full Video Of The Game

On the 15th August the Black Swans hosted their first home game at the Swanley Rec, Swanley's current home base. They hosted Lordswood Valkyries, who will start the season 2 leagues above, and turned up en masse with plenty of substitutes and several coaches. Due to some availability issues and work commitments the Black Swans pulled in a favour and borrowed 3 players from elsewhere. Many thanks to Lisa, Lucy and Spaz for helping us out.

As a pre-season/training game, the game was played in 4 quarters.

The game started in a frenetic fashion and after a couple of missed tackles Lordswood scored in the corner. The Swans didnt let their heads drop and impressed with their defence in the next part of the first quarter, Lordswood having to go through more than 20 phases to score their next try as one of their front row eventually reached over to score. Lordswood added one more try in the first quarter before a well earned break and drinks.

The second quarter started much better for the Black Swans and they were on the front foot for the majority of it. Camped in the Lordswood half for several minutes and then a break from Lucy (loanee) into the 22 and good recycling of the ball got the balls into the hands of another loanee Spaz, who showed good pace to score to the right of the posts. Stef Buckland just missing the conversion under the bar. It was a good team try overall and a good motivation for the Black Swans. They continued to press with good defence and good phases of attack continually making yards with ball in hand. Lordswood struggled with this and conceded a few penalties. From one of these, scrum half Stef Buckland fed No 8 Vicki Larkby, who showed good pace to round several defenders and beat the full back to score just in from the corner. Another excellent try. Unfortunately the conversion was a long way out and the try went unconverted. Throughout the rest of this quarter the Black Swans again showed excellent defence, the forwards tackled their counterparts well all game and resisted their well planned out mauls with excellent defence and made Lordswood utilise their backs. This was unfortunately the story of the rest of the game as Lordswoods very pacey outside centre continually made breaks from all over the field scoring several tries in the process. There continued to be some good phases of play from the Swans, including several try saving tackles from the backs, and you could see they all grew in confidence as the game went on, this day however was not to be theirs, the experience in games of the other team meaning they ran out comfortable winners in the end.

The match was well supported by family and friends and many thanks go to all for turning up and everyone who helped out to enable the match to go ahead and all players to be fed afterwards. A tough first outing in a full game for the Swans but all are determined to push on from this point.

Everyone played so well we were unable to pick just one player so everyone received a player of the match pint!!!!
